Modern English

These post-punk Brits may have stopped the world in 1982, back when their hit “I Melt With You” captured Cold War brinksmanship through the depiction of two lovers going all the way as bombs begin to fall, but the world didn’t stop for them. Nuclear war averted and five albums later, they’ll never escape the afterglow of New Wave immortality, yet Modern English’s diverse body of work shows an evolving aesthetic that transcends Thatcher-era malaise. Their electrifying live shows testify to frontman Robbie Grey’s lasting charisma, even if ’80s nostalgia draws the majority of the crowd, especially on the somewhat predictable yet exciting closer, when time stands still.
