Labor Day is just a week away. It’s your last chance to see comedians work dirtier, push envelopes harder, and tell industrial quantities of Ben Affleck/Batman jokes before “real life” resumes. Here are our picks for the best of the bunch.
Monday, August 26th
Night Train with Wyatt Cenac
Littlefield, 8 p.m.
$5 online, $8 at the door
Now bedded in as the best of all possible replacements for Hot Tub!, Wyatt Cenac’s Night Train nails the formula for successful comedy in New York: fun room, rabid fan base, and a hot, talented, famous black guy hosting. Jessi Klein and Eugene Mirman deliver the goods tonight, with Jermaine Fowler, Guy Branum, Billy Wayne Davis and RG Daniels.
Also on Monday
Press Record – with John F. O’Donnell
Brit Pack Studios, 9 p.m.
FREE (limited space – email to RSVP)
Magical weirdo John F. O’Donnell will be recording a half-hour of carefully crafted material tonight, and if you’ve never seen a comic tape a long set, you should go. It’s a privilege to see years of jokes laid down in one night, captured at the peak of their life, like those mosquitoes in Jurassic Park. You can BYOB and some free booze will be provided.
Tuesday, August 27th
Kurt Braunohler Record Release Party
The Bell House, 8 p.m.
Kurt Braunohler returns to Brooklyn in bloody triumph, bearing his newly released standup album (read all about it in our interview with him here). He’s joined by Todd Barry, Eugene Mirman, Nick Turner, and Ted Leo in probably the most ridiculously entertaining bill of the week.
Wednesday, August 28th
Union Hall, 8:30 p.m.
$6 (tickets here)
Hot 97’s DJ Cipha Sounds and Spike TV’s Lukas Kaiser continue to build brutally good lineups at their Brooklyn home. Heavy-hitter Hannibal Burress headlines, helped by Mark Normand (Conan, Comedy Central and the best filthy joke writer in the city), MTV Girl Code‘s Giulia Rozzi and others.
Thursday August 29th
The Creek and the Cave , 8 p.m.
$6 online, $10 at the door
What do you get when you mix stand up comedy, burlesque performers, side-show oddities, and circus performers? Boners. Oh, and this show. Comics Lane Pieschel (Bridgetown Comedy Festival), Julia Solomon and Missy Baker (Time Out Joke of the Week) fan dancer Marlena Dee, magician Nelson Lugo, and “boy-lesque” performer Alfie Bunz.
Friday August 30th
UCBeast, 10:30 p.m.
Top shelfers Paul Oddo (Boston Comedy Festival), Will Hines (Adult Swim), Nick Mullen (Montreal Just for Laughs) and Sara Armour (Laughing Skull) give you a Friday night of comedy no one has to worry about: audience shows up, performers knock it out of the park, you go home happy.
