Mayoral Candidate Cocktails? I’ll Drink to That

by

What do a man under federal investigation, a Happy Meal hater, an arrested protester, a flip-flopping stop-and-frisker, and a serial sexter have in common? They’re all front runners to becoming New York City mayor. With a cast like this in the polls, we had to have some In The Spirit fun. We asked the Mulberry Project’s Rael Petit to create five cocktails inspired by this voting season’s best.

For The Love of John Liu Money

It seems Liu can’t rid himself of money issues. Under investigation for the last three years for campaign financing fraud, Liu also keeps money in the forefront of his campaign, offering to raise the minimum wage to $11.50.

1 oz. sake
1 oz. Maraschino liqueur
1 oz. green chartreuse
1/2 oz. simple syrup
1/2 oz. lime juice

Shake and pour into a coup glass with a sphere cube. Garnish with a grapefruit twist.

Quinn Peppadew Martini

While often accused of being a Bloomberg wannabe (see McDonald’s Happy Meals), this tough, female leader is adding a little spice to the race with her own innovative ideas and wise-cracking New Yorker pizzazz.

2 oz. Breuckelen Glorious Gin
1 oz. Martini Bianco

Rinse a coup glass with Bénédictine liqueur. Shake and pour martini into coup. Top with a skewered peppadew pepper.

Thompson’s NYPD Blues

Bill Thompson vows to ban the already illegal act of racial profiling, he supports stop-and-frisk policies, and he wants to up the NYPD force by 2,000. Confused? We are too.

2 oz. Rémy Martin
1 oz. cinnamon bark simple syrup
1/2 oz. coconut milk
1/2 oz. Mandarine Napoléon
1 oz. blue “Glacier Freeze” Gatorade

Blend with ice and pour in a chilled schooner glass. Top with 2 oz. Gatorade and garnish with a pineapple leaf.

De Blasio’s Pre-K Fun Day

Park Sloper Bill de Blasio is heating up the race with his lefty family-friendly ideas like creating universal pre-K (paid for by taxing the rich). Oh, and banning styrofoam.

1 1/2 oz. vodka
1/2 oz. Saint Germain
1/4 oz. simple syrup
3/4 oz. lemon juice

Muddle ingredients with 1/2 cup watermelon. Shake, strain and pour into a rock glass. Garnish with watermelon Sour Patch Kids and a Hello Kitty figurine.

The Weiner Mary

Does this need an explanation? I think not. Drink up and enjoy.

2 oz. Hudson New York Corn Whiskey
2 oz. tomato juice
3/4 oz. lemon juice
1 teaspoon horseradish
10 twists fresh black pepper
3 dashes Sriracha
1 dash cholula hot sauce
Pinch of salt

Rim a tall glass with lemon, salt and pepper. Garnish with a large pickle and charred hot dog.
