You know Playland Motel is going to be hip before you even step inside. After all, the front door—located at Beach 98th and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, one block from the beach, one block from the subway, and immediately off the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge—is barely visible, and the backyard music, if you can hear it from the street, is usually loud. Though we’ve never stayed the night (rooms range from $99 to $250, depending on the season), we can confirm that the Playland is a great place to wile away an afternoon or perhaps spend the evening after a day in the water. Food is solid, drinks are strong, and that music is not only loud but also highly danceable: This summer, Playland’s Tiki Disco triumvirate kept the party going late into the night, exhausting some before for a night upstairs and others before a long train ride home.
