The soul slant that the virtuoso bassist gives his playing on the new Out Here has a mighty sense of seduction. McBride adores the blues, and consistently finds ways to turn standard patterns into unique declarations. Meanwhile, in pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr, the bassist has found fellow travelers who enjoy a bit of flash while sustaining an even keel. From the hard swing of “Ham Hocks and Cabbage” to the recalibration of “My Favorite Things,” they always have you guessing.
