Who says death-metal growlers can’t be sentimental? Tonight, one of the genre’s founding bands, Morbid Angel, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its touchstone third album Covenant. But you can’t fault them for feeling mushy, as a report 10 years ago named it the best-selling death-metal album of all time, with 150,000 copies purchased at the time of publication. The blast-beating, riff-grinding crew will be playing the record—which they filled with touching, Keats-like odes such as “World of Shit,” and booty-call classics like “Angel of Disease”—from front to back.
