Tacos from Los Tacos No. 1 (75 Ninth Avenue, 212-256-0343), $2.50-$3.50
Need a cheap bite during an excursion to Chelsea Market? This taqueria turns out cheap, tasty bites.
While relatively affordable eats have proliferated in Chelsea Market of late (see Hybird and Num Pang, where you can score a meal for between $10 and $15), there’s one place to head if you’re looking for something truly cheap, and that’s Los Tacos No. 1. This taco counter in the center of the market doles out corn tortillas saddled with meat still sizzling from the flat top, leaving you to top your lunch with salsas and pickled peppers and then post up at a counter to shove them in your face. We’re partial to the carne asada–the steak flecked with char and infused with the tang of the grill–and the nopal (cactus), and one of each is more than enough to fortify you for a second round of shopping (or tourist guiding).
If you have 10 bucks in your pocket, by the way, you could stuff yourself with three of these tacos. More recommendable is to buy two–which will fill your gut just fine–and spend some of that remaining cash on horchata, ladled from the giant jug near the register and spiked with plenty of cinnamon.
