New Jersey Mall Shooter Found Dead From a Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

Hours after police cleared the Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus, New Jersey, the shooter who walked into the mall just before closing time was found dead in a remote corner of the building.

Richard Shoop, a 20-year-old with a history of drug abuse, is the prime suspect for the shooting. At slightly past 9 p.m. Monday, Shoop began firing his modified rifle at random, hitting no one in the process. He then turned the gun on himself.

According to Reuters, authorities discovered that Shoop had been dead for hours before he was found.

It is not yet known what brought Shoop to the mall or why he was firing, a witness tells CBS that Shoop only shot straight up.

Shoop appeared to be an aspiring actor and model. His profile on gives pictures of the man as well as lists the types of jobs he was after: trade show modeling gigs, non-Screen Actors Guild film roles, extra spots in music videos.
