Grilled cheese sandwiches from The Queens Kickshaw (40-17 Broadway, Queens, 718-777-0913), $8-$10
A comfort food staple is endlessly reimagined at this vegetarian restaurant in Queens.
This Astoria vegetarian spot serves up an affordable — and innovative — menu from early morning until 1 a.m., dealing in everything from mac ‘n’ cheese to bibimbap to lasagna. The spot first became known for its fancy grilled cheese sandwiches, though, and it’s still hard to beat the roster of wacky takes on this comfort food staple when you’re looking for a hearty meal. On the basic side, you’ve got the cheddar and mozzarella ($8), which is especially of value because it’s served with tomato soup. The spot also stuffs sandwiches with gruyère and caramelized onions, manchego and minted eggplant, and a strange-sounding blend of gouda, black bean hummus, guava jam, and pickled jalapeños. New combos roll out every so often, so be on the look out for changes. And if you have a few extra dollars in your pocket, you might pair your sandwich to a bottle of cider: The extensive selection here is one of the best in the city.
