Murray’s melts from Murray’s Cheese (254 Bleecker Street, 212-243-3289), $3.99-$7.99
These fancy grilled cheese sandwiches offer an affordable taste of the top-notch Murray’s dairy selection.
Murray’s is one of the best cheese and charcuterie purveyors in the city, which means we thought of it often when we were throwing a dinner party but never when we were jonesing for a cheap meal. That changed when a friend tipped us off to the melts at the Greenwich Village location, a board of fancied up grilled cheese sandwiches made on Blue Ribbon Bakery’s wheat or white bread, each of which rings in well under $10. The cheapest is the Murray’s Melt, which features a blend of three cheeses (Murray’s claims the varieties are secret; we’d bet gruyere, cheddar, and mozzarella make the cut) and is just $3.99; most sandwiches — including the buffalo chicken blue and the burrata BBLT (burrata, bacon, lettuce, and tomato) — run $6.99. Our favorite order is the bacon and cheddar, which pits two types of the sharp dairy against the smoky strips of pork; the sandwich is toasted until the bread is golden and crispy and the cheese is stringy and gooey.
