Donuts from Peter Pan Bakery (727 Manhattan Avenue, Brooklyn, 718-389-3676), $1
If you can get on board with replacing a meal with a donut or two, one of the best cheap meals in the city awaits you in Greenpoint.
One of the best things about being an adult is that you can make mealtime decisions that would have made your mother cringe. Having your breakfast a la mode, for instance, or doing what we did today: Eating a donut and calling it lunch. That’s an especially compelling proposition at Peter Pan Donuts, the Greenpoint bakery that’s built its rep on its ability to put together a solid, no-frills torus-shaped breakfast pastry that’s light and fluffy and sweet, simultaneously reminiscent of the donuts you found in a hometown diner while blowing those sweets of past out of the proverbial water. (Also, Tina Fey once admitted she’d like to defile these snacks.) While the shop vends a couple of creative flavors like red velvet, it’s the basic varieties that really stand out — you’ll want to saddle up to the counter and order a cup of coffee plus a nostalgia-inducing sour cream, white cream, glazed, or coconut round. Or what the hell, all four. They’re only a buck a pop, and you, our friend, are an adult.
