Biscuits and gravy from Northern Spy Food Co. (511 East 12th Street, 212-228-5100), $9
Has the cold crippled your healthy eating resolve? Us too. So we’re having biscuits and gravy.
This weather is seriously compromising our resolve when it comes to starting out the year with a bit of a detox — now is obviously the time to drink hot chocolate (potentially spiked with something stronger) until we pass out, and you know we’re not following that up with a salad. Which is why we’re pondering lunch at Northern Spy Food Co.; the East Village spot turns out some of the best biscuits and gravy in the city (and on a cold day, we’re not sure we can think of a dish more fortifying than that one). Two fluffy buttermilk biscuits come doused in porky, peppery sausage-strewn gravy, and while that’s certainly enough to send you home for a warm winter’s nap, we’d add the baked eggs if you’ve got the spare cash. We like the way the yolk mingles with the rest of the platter. Oh, and if you’re better at keeping your resolutions than us, you’ll also find healthier options here — the tomato soup and kale salad, for instance.
Restaurants open at a dizzying pace in New York City, and keeping up with what’s hot takes some serious cash. If you — like us — need the occasional reprieve from a food-forward spending spree, you’re likely always on the lookout for cheap eats of high quality. In this space each day, we’ll highlight a tasty dish that rings in for less than $10, spotlighting places worth checking out when you’d like to get full while giving your wallet a break.
