A Bloody Mary Recipe From the Pine Box

If you’re ready to crash and burn, though — perhaps just in time for the AFC and NFC championships this weekend — consider kicking off your weekend morning with the best bloody mary in the city at Pine Box Rock Shop (12 Grattan Street, Brooklyn, 718-366-6311).

The bar turns out a long list of bloodies, which range from classic to extra spicy to ginger- and pineapple-spiked. And once you’ve soothed your pounding head, you can move straight into the draft beer list, which highlights a melange of craft brews.

Feel like making a bloody at home instead? The Pine Box keeps its recipe vague, but owners Jeff and Heather Rush were nice enough to give us the basic ingredients for the Holiday In Cambodia, the version that won them the top prize at the 2013 NYC Hot Sauce Expo: Absolut Citron, V8, pineapple juice, soy sauce, homemade spicy pickle brine, sweet & sour Tabasco sauce, and a blend of dry seasonings.

If it were us, we’d start our experimentation with these proportions:
3 ounces of V8
1 1/2 ounces of Absolut
1/2 ounce pineapple juice
A dash or two of soy sauce
A splash of dill pickle brine
A dash or two of Tabasco
A shake of celery salt and hot pepper (and possibly a spoonful of horseradish)

Roll between two glasses to blend ingredients and serve over ice.
