DNA Tests Confirm Body Found in Queens is Avonte Oquendo’s

DNA tests conducted by the city medical examiner confirmed that the remains found at College Point, Queens late Thursday night are, in fact, those of Avonte Oquendo.

On Friday, police confirmed that the pants and shoes found on the body matched, in both size and color, the clothes Oquendo was wearing when he was last seen.

Oquendo, who was autistic and non-verbal, walked out the Riverview School in Long Island City, Queens on October 4, 2013.

According to a memo leaked after his disappearance, the school lacked a number of safety precautions. Administrators did not have passwords to access to security camera footage the day Oquendo left, leading them to believe he was hiding somewhere in the school. There was no monitor at the front desk either, no console for a school agent, and the doors did not have alarmed panic bars.

Oquendo’s mother is pursuing a lawsuit against the city.

Powell Cove Boulevard, where Oquendo’s remains were found, is at least a three hour walk from from the Riverview School.
