If you’re looking for some hearty, warm relief from polar vortex 3 (or winter in New York, as it is now known), stop by brand new braised meat sandwich shop Untamed Sandwiches (43 West 39th Street, 646-669-9397) just south of Bryant Park. Andy Jacobi, a former meat company exec, teamed up with R. L. King, the current chef of Heath at the McKittrick Hotel and the former chef of Hundred Acres and Five Points, to create a fast casual concept where quality is the focus.
“Working for a grass-fed buffalo meat company, I always thought that most chefs and supermarket managers should be more willing to take the risk of serving high end sustainable meats to their customers, even if the price point is higher,” says Jacobi. “Is it worth the extra expense? We think so, and we think that there are enough people out there who will pay an extra couple of dollars for something that is particularly special.”
And special they are. For a few dollars more than a typical midtown sandwich, you can get “The Chupacabra” ($13), a gamey combination of braised goat, spicy roast carrots, whipped goat cheese, and crispy kohlrabi slaw. All of the sandwiches come on Grandaisy Bakery ciabattas or a surprisingly tasty gluten-free roll from Free Bread for a dollar more. If meat isn’t your thing, the vegetarian options are just as hearty and filling. Try the “Carla Bruni” ($9), which is stuffed with braised vegetables, stravecchio cheese, olive spread, and basil.
Open long past the midtown lunch hour, Untamed wants to be more than just a quick sandwich spot. With a full beer and wine list that was crafted with as much care as the menu, you could grab a late lunch and hang out at a communal table in the cozy wooden space with a Narragansett Lager or a glass of La Grue Cendree Sauvignon Blanc. In the warmer months, Untamed’s windows will fold up completely, turning it into a welcoming sidewalk café.
Untamed Sandwiches is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
