SPANISH FLY

Performing 11 times over five days (there’s a Saturday matinee, too), unique flamenco artist Soledad Barrio revisits 15 years of appearances on this tiny cabaret stage — to be sure, a more authentic setting for what she does than the proscenium theaters that also welcome her. Flamenco, a hybrid stemming from roots in Gypsy, Arab, Moorish, and Jewish cultures and flourishing in southern Spain, was originally a pastime of the disenfranchised. Barrio delivers a particularly pure, profound form. Compact and tightly wound, she also interprets, with her superb musicians, Sophocles’s Antigone, in selections from a new production co-directed by Lee Breuer (Mabou Mines) and her husband, Martin Santangelo.
