This past January, New Yorker Alex Sverdlov became stranded while hiking up the massive 13,679-foot Mauna Loa (“long mountain”) volcano on the Island of Hawaii, after the arid weather took a drastic turn on day two of his journey. Over the course of a few hours, snow completely covered the trail-markers and Sverdlov began to hallucinate as he ran out of water and the altitude took its toll.
