When one restaurant’s doors close another restaurant’s doors open in fast-paced New York City, and every Friday, we’ll fill you in on what opened up around town this week. This week: a table d’hôte concept in Harlem, a warehouse-turned-restaurant in Brooklyn, and Bobby Flay’s highly anticipated Mediterranean temple in NoHo.
Academia Barilla, 1290 Sixth Avenue, 646-559-2206
Pasta company Barilla now has a fast-casual restaurant in Midtown. The menu includes pizza, salad, panini, and, of course, pasta. After you eat, you can buy the brand’s pasta sauces and noodles to take home. Eater reports that Barilla’s CEO Stefano Albano is already looking to open two more locations in the city.
Butterfish, 550 Madison Avenue, 212-729-1819
Taking over the space once inhabited by Solo Restaurant is Butterfish, a sushi spot headed by Chef Hitoshi. We spoke to the Tokyo native earlier this week about his 60-seat operation, which will focus mostly on affordable omakase menus. Butterfish is now open for lunch and dinner.
Cheri, 231 Lenox Avenue, 212-662-4374
Cheri is a French restaurant with a “table d’hôte” concept, which means that every evening, chef Alain Eoche creates a unique three-course dinner based on what local produce and food looks good that day. The restaurant’s interior is a hodgepodge of modern and traditional. Cheri is now open for dinner and weekend brunch.
Chicane, 430 Broome Street, 212-226-5999
Restaurateurs Jerome Solamito and Clovis Lambardan bring us Chicane, a bistro with a seafood-heavy menu. Chef Andres Grundy, formerly of Daniel and Le Cirque, is serving up bouillabaisse, mussels, tuna tartar, and more in an inviting space with a lot of natural light. Chicane is currently open for dinner but plans to offer brunch soon.
Gato, 324 Lafayette Street, 212-334-6400
Celebrity Chef Bobby Flay’s long-awaited Mediterranean restaurant has arrived. Gato is named for an orange cat that Flay spotted when first visiting the NoHo space. The 3,640 square foot space houses a 117-seat dining room, a 20-seat wood bar, and a lounge area. With blue tiled floors and a mixture of wood paneling and exposed brick walls, the restaurant looks like a Mediterranean village. Take a look at the menu. Gato is now open for dinner and will soon be open for brunch.
Northern Territory, 12 Franklin Street, Brooklyn
Northern Territory is a restored warehouse turned bar/restaurant from the owners of Berry Park, and it serves an eclectic menu with dishes such as chicken schnitzel and meat pies. The bar will have six beers on draft as well as a variety of cocktails, which patrons can enjoy on the rooftop once construction is completed.
Schnitz, 177 First Avenue, 646-861-3923
Former Smorgasburg vendor Schnitz has opened the doors to its first brick-and-mortar restaurant. Siblings Yoni and Donna Erlich began serving their schnitzel sandwiches back in 2011, and their success allowed them to land a space in the East Village. The schnitzel sandwiches served on Tomcat bakery pretzel heroes are priced under $14.
Sweetwater Social, 643 Broadway, 212-253-7467
Sweetwater Social opened earlier this week below Bleecker Kitchen & Co., and we spoke with co-owner Justin Noel about his plans for the watering hole, which he envisions as a space where you can not only get a high quality cocktail, but also have a great time. Look for arcade games, foosball tables, televisions, and shuffleboard and cocktails inspired by New York City subway stops.
