When Austin’s . . . And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead decided to perform their critically acclaimed 2002 album, Source Tags & Codes, in its entirety, they surely anticipated that (as someone intones in the middle of “Days of Being Wild”) “your audience is the people of New York.” Trail of Dead’s best album is a thing of wild beauty. The New York connection appears most clearly whenever founding members Conrad Keely and Jason Reece’s guitars hit that Sonic Youth-by way of-My Bloody Valentine pitch. Redolent of adolescent rage and pathos, Source Tags is a rare album whose sizzle, in this case a lot of elegant feedback and industriodelic segues, is as compelling as its steak: big, beefy slabs of hard-rock romanticism.
