The Five Boro Bike Tour started in 1977 with about 250 riders as a one-time event to promote bike safety. This year, an expected 32,000 bikers traverse all five boroughs with proceeds still going to bike education; last year, more than 15,000 New Yorkers attended free education classes. The ride is 40 miles from Battery Park to Staten Island, through parks and over several bridges, including a breathtaking ride over the Verrazano Narrows to Staten Island. Two great things to keep in mind: First, it’s a tour, not a race, so don’t feel pressured to finish. Second, all roads on the route are closed to cars. This event is three-quarters as big as the New York Marathon, so be prepared to go early and follow all the rules, especially guidelines on bags. The tour usually sells out the first few days, but you can ride on behalf of one of the Tour’s charity partners.
