Panicking About Mother’s Day? Five Solid Last-Minute Plans

If, right now, you’re just realizing that Sunday is Mother’s Day, and that’s making you say, “Shit shit shit shit shit,” we want you to know that you’re not alone. Plenty of us have procrastinated on how to make Mom feel special until right this very second, and while you can probably kiss that coveted brunch reservation goodbye, there are several ways to make up for your lack of planning — without your mother catching a whiff of your utter lack of preparation.

Have a picnic
The nice thing about this plan is that it requires very little advance action. Take your mom to a provisions shop, pick up some meats, cheeses, and, perhaps, a bottle of wine, and head for a sunny spot. If you’re near Prospect Park, the BKLYN Larder is a solid option; up by Central Park, head for Zabar’s. Or have your picnic delivered to you via The Perfect Picnic.

Go to Klezmer Brunch and do a little wine tasting
City Winery offers up a weekly brunch with live Klezmer entertainment (and if you’re not into the music, you’ll be able to order plenty of wine). This weekend’s brunch still has reservations available, as does brunch in the Barrel Room, where you can do a little vino tasting over your feast.

Take her sailing
Manhattan is an island, believe it or not, and there are many ways to get on the water with a little food and drink. One of which is Manhattan By Sail, which operates many different kinds of boating excursions. Have drinks while you take in the New York twilight, learn about craft beer on Sunday at noon, or board the schooner for champagne brunch. Reservations for each of this are still available on Sunday — we checked.

Take her to a cooking class
The Institute of Culinary Education still has a few slots available in its Sunday classes, which means you can sign up for some quality bonding time while you learn something new. And if nothing on Sunday strikes your fancy, we’re sure she’ll give you a pass for presenting her with a class that you’ll take with her in the near future.
