The first BookCon took place last week at the Javits Center, where fans lined up in droves to see the Fault in Our Stars movie panel with the author John Green, Hollywood stars-turned-authors, including Jason Segal and Amy Poehler, and perhaps the biggest draw, Grumpy Cat, who had a never-ending line for its two hour appearance and photo opp. The list of Hollywood stars grows longer with the addition of Danielle Fishel (Topanga on the Boy/Girl Meets World shows) and Cary Elwes, the star of The Princess Bride.
Photographer Brandon Stanton discussed how he approaches people for the photos in his Humans of New York series and how smokers are easier to get as subjects since he know’s they’ll be hanging around a while. While John Grant’s Fault in Our Stars is a literary phenomenon, his panel was really promotion of the film adaptation coming out this week. The shrieks of teen girls filled the hall as a sneak peek was shown in front of some members of the film and a couple high level folks at 20th Century Fox. Food personalities like Dominique Ansel (before BookCon) and Mario Batali both had new works as well.
