This Week’s Five Best Food and Drink Events – 6/23/2014

In the mood for crawfish? How about cider? Take a gander at this week’s jam-packed line-up of intriguing food events.

Crawfish Boil, Battery Harris, 64 Frost Street, Brooklyn, Monday, 7 p.m.

For $20, enjoy unlimited crawfish, jerk sausage, and corn on the cob while celebrating Battery Harris’ one year anniversary. The indoor/outdoor Carribbean pad is also offering $15 pitchers of Abita brews in addition to its usual line up of frozen cocktails; you’ll need an advance reservation.

Cider in the Summer, The Queens Kickshaw, 40-17 Broadway, Queens, Tuesday and Wednesday, 5:45 p.m.

Queens Kickshaw is celebrating ciders all week long, and on Tuesday and Wednesday, it’s throwing special five-course cider dinners. Guests will get the chance to sample the goods from Queens’ first cidery, Descendant Cider; courses include poached egg and corn tortellini. Dinner tickets are $55.

And If You Lose Your Way, or A Food Odyssey, The Invisible Dog Art Center, 51 Bergen Street, Brooklyn, Tuesday through June 28, 7 p.m.

A retelling of Homer’s The Odyssey that incorporates food as a major theme, this event uses ancient Greek tales to help shine a light on the issues facing the modern day food industry (think cyclops as the monstrous one-eyed corporate chain). Food culture and our relationship to its various elements will be explored in detail — plus there’ll be snacks for audience members. Tickets as $18 and can be purchased here.

Chinese Culinary Competition and Asian Food Tasting, Times Square, Broadway between 42nd and 43rd Street, Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m.

Chefs will compete against one another in a battle to see who can prepare the best dishes from five regions of China, and attendees will taste bites that range from Cantonese to Szechuan in origin. The two-day event will also feature cultural performances as well as free treats like hand-made mochi, a dumpling eating competition, and a noodle-pulling demonstration. Most events are free and open to the public, but you can reserve a seat to taste in one of the competitions for $88.

Pizza Mile, McCarren Park, 776 Lorimer Street, Brooklyn, Wednesday, 8 p.m.

If you didn’t make it to pizza’s birthday party, make up for it by checking out the NYC Pizza Mile. Runners must eat a whole slice of pizza per mile; the course is four miles total, and the fastest runner receives a $30 gift card from the Brooklyn Running Company. The race is free to enter, and supporters are encouraged to come out. Additional details can be found on the event’s Facebook page.
