Sick of your usual call drink? Try something new. In this series, we’re asking the city’s bartenders to name their current drinks of choice. Check out our Good Call archives for another round.
Today’s call comes by way of Kasia Krupinska of The Third Man (116 Avenue C; 212-598-1040).
What’s your call drink?
My favorite go-to drink is a twist on the Last Word, a classic cocktail usually made with equal parts gin, chartreuse, maraschino, and lime. I change it up by asking the bartender to use mezcal instead of gin, as it adds a wonderful smokiness to the drink.
What is it about this drink that you like so much?
Its simple and refreshing, and the end result is so much more than the sum of its parts. It combines all the flavors that I love and is herbaceous, tangy, smoky, and slightly sweet. The simple ingredients somehow fuse into something magical.
How did you find this drink?
Years ago, I asked my bartender friend for something classic and refreshing at his newly opened bar, and he introduced me to the Last Word. I drank it classically for a while, and the mezcal twist came later on when I started working at The Third Man. Since then, it’s become my go to.
