Dish no. 87: Salted caramel pretzel ice cream from Morgenstern’s (2 Rivington Street, 212-209-7684)
Plot your trip to Morgenstern’s knowing that your favorite flavor may very well be unavailable — each time we’ve stopped into the parlor (and the number of trips we’ve made is quickly rising), the shop has served just some of the flavors listed on the board. Luckily, these flavors change, and even more luckily, the place has never been short on salted caramel pretzel, which we could eat by the gallon. Toasty, sweet caramel notes mingle with a spike of saline; pretzel chunks are added to the creamy base to order so that they don’t get soggy with dairy. If the counter has it, pair this scoop to the chocolate oat — it provides a nice earthy edge to the sweet-savory treat.
In advance of our 2014 Best of NYC issue, we’re traipsing through the boroughs and divulging our favorite dishes of the year. They’re presented here as a countdown, but we’re listing them in no particular order. Consider this a guide to what’s good to eat in this town right this very second.
