Dish no. 85: Thai iced cream from Oddfellows Ice Cream Company (175 Kent Avenue Brooklyn, 347-599-0556; 75 East 4th Street, 917-475-1812)
The original and creative flavors at this always-popular ice creamery are what separates Oddfellows from the other scoop emporiums around town. And while flavors like chorizo-caramel swirl and manchego pineapple with thyme might be an acquired taste, you’ll also find crowd-pleasers on the menu like the Thai iced cream. The shop takes inspiration from a Thai iced tea, where condensed milk is typically added to a Ceylon-based tea, and the resultant flavor successfully mimics the subtle sweetness and lightly bitter underpinnings of the original drink. You should always order it in one of the freshly made waffle cones.
In advance of our 2014 Best of NYC issue, we’re traipsing through the boroughs and divulging our favorite dishes of the year. They’re presented here as a countdown, but we’re listing them in no particular order. Consider this a guide to what’s good to eat in this town right this very second.
