Overview: Pies ‘n’ Thighs opened in 2006 at the corner of South Fourth Street and Driggs, catty-corner from the Williamsburg Bridge. The restaurant’s menu overflows with Southern comfort food classics, and the place is widely known in Brooklyn for its fried chicken and fried catfish. While the restaurant has become a wildly popular destination, it’s still kept its neighborhood charm as a Southern diner with reasonable prices. And Pies ‘n’ Thighs’ carnivorous dishes aside, the restaurant has a few choice vegetarian dishes that make it a worthy stop for those on an herbivorous diet.
Highlights: The Pies ‘n’ Thighs’ menu doesn’t exactly cater to vegetarians, but if you’re a meat-free sort, head straight for the hippie banjo ($7.50), which sandwiches an over-easy fried egg, cheddar cheese, avocado, tomato, sprouts, and mayo between two slices of anadama bread, a thick, yeasty loaf with huge crunch: This sandwich tastes like it was drenched in butter and grilled directly on a pan. The restaurant can be a little heavy-handed on the mayo, but the sprouts are a refreshing addition to the dish, providing another texture that separates Pies ‘n’ Thighs’ fried egg sandwich from the typical fried egg sandwich.
Side it with an order of homefries ($4), classic roasted rosemary potatoes, which are cooked until they are perfectly brown and crispy.
The hippie banjo is only served during breakfast, lunch, and brunch; breakfast and lunch hours are weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and brunch hours are weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pies ‘n’ Thighs has a few other vegetarian options during dinner, including fried green tomatoes ($6.50) and corn on the cob ($5). And, of course, you could always order pie.
