Dish no. 69: Grasshopper ice cream cake at Quality Meats (57 West 58th Street, 212-371-7777)
Halfway between the five-course dessert tasting at Per Se and pie-bottomed sundae goblets at Serendipity 3, the most compact exercise in decadence lurks steps beneath West 58th Street, behind the marble ice cream-and-lemonade counter at Quality Meats. Here, you can ask for a pint of the chocolate, pretzel, and banana-infused Take 5 or Coffee & Doughnuts, or, better yet, witness the creation of a candle-worthy ice cream cake for one. Choose the Grasshopper, a creme de menthe-frosted mint Oreo ice cream and Devil’s food cake combo. You needn’t survive another year to earn one, just until the bar opens at 4 p.m.
In advance of our 2014 Best of NYC issue, we’re traipsing through the boroughs and divulging our favorite dishes of the year. They’re presented here as a countdown, but we’re listing them in no particular order. Consider this a guide to what’s good to eat in this town right this very second.
