Dish no. 67: Mozzarella at Mike’s Deli, Arthur Avenue Retail Market (2344 Arthur Avenue, Bronx, 718-295-5033)
There are dozens of reasons why you should head to Arthur Avenue for an afternoon of grazing — sidewalk seafood, cured meats, pasta, and canoli filled to order, for starters. And at some point during your sojourn, you should stop into the Arthur Avenue Retail Market and head for Mike’s Deli, where you might — might — find someone behind the counter making mozzarella. Even if you miss the demonstration, though, purchase a bit (and maybe some bread, either here or at Madonia Brothers Bakery just up the street) and pull up a chair in the beer garden — the cheese will be fresh (probably still warm), silky, and leaking cream. It’s a simple pleasure, and one that’s utterly decadent.
In advance of our 2014 Best of NYC issue, we’re traipsing through the boroughs and divulging our favorite dishes of the year. They’re presented here as a countdown, but we’re listing them in no particular order. Consider this a guide to what’s good to eat in this town right this very second.
