Dish no. 66: Sliced mango from the Union Square Mango Cart (14th Street between Broadway and University)
With the summer heat just beginning to hit its peak, it’s somewhat repulsive to consider walking around on hot, concrete sidewalks. If you’re forced to, though, and you’re somewhere in the vicinity of Union Square, consider visiting the mango cart ladies who set up on 14th street between University and Broadway. Open for business seven days a week, the cart sells sliced mango at $3 per juicy, ripe fruit. The treat comes in a Ziplock bag, served with a choice of lemon juice, salt, hot sauce, and chili powder. We order ‘all the way,’ which gets you everything, a meld of sweet, hot, and acidic flavors.
In advance of our 2014 Best of NYC issue, we’re traipsing through the boroughs and divulging our favorite dishes of the year. They’re presented here as a countdown, but we’re listing them in no particular order. Consider this a guide to what’s good to eat in this town right this very second.
