In the age-old NYC battle between pedestrians and cars, the pedestrians win out for three Saturdays this month as the Department of Transportation sponsors Summer Streets, an amazing event during which nearly seven miles of Park Avenue are blocked off from traffic in order to host bike tours, a 160–foot zip line, a climbing wall, food stands and non-stop live music, among other diversions. Bonus: the Park Avenue tunnel becomes a seven-block interactive sound-and-light art installation by Jane Winderen. Last year more than 300,000 New Yorkers got outside for Summer Streets, and there was plenty of room for more! All activities are free, and there is something for everyone regardless of age or mobility.
