Dish no. 56, Lemon Ice from Lemon Ice King of Corona, (52-02 108th Street, Queens, 718-699-5133)
Since the 1940s, this family-owned shop in deep Queens has been turning out NYC’s freshest Italian ices. There are over 30 flavors, including some esoteric variations on the frozen dessert, like tangerine and cantaloupe, each studded with pieces of real fruit — but you’ll have to commit to just one, because LIKC steadfastly refuses to mix their ices. Go with the classic lemon — there’s nothing more reinvigorating when you’re wilting in the summer heat — and slurp it down while watching old-timers play bocce to Italian opera in the nearby park.
In advance of our 2014 Best of NYC issue, we’re traipsing through the boroughs and divulging our favorite dishes of the year. They’re presented here as a countdown, but we’re listing them in no particular order. Consider this a guide to what’s good to eat in this town right this very second.
