Until recently, the Gowanus Canal was the last place you’d head for dinner and drinks; the Superfund site is thought to be one of the most polluted bodies of water in the country. Luckily, the Gowanus Canal Conservancy, a nonprofit dedicated to greening the area, has stepped in to revitalize the 1.8–mile–long canal once associated with toxicity. Tonight’s Gowanus Dive In/Drink Up celebrates the burgeoning dining scene in the neighborhood, with a portion of the proceeds from specially created dishes and cocktails benefiting the GCC’s many clean-up initiatives. The 25 participating restaurants include beloved Northern Italian spot al di la, shellfish slinger Littleneck, the Pines, which pays tribute to its industrial surroundings with its scruffy pressed tin aesthetics, and Southside Coffee, named one of the best cafes in the borough by Brooklyn Magazine.
