Just over a century ago, Jacob Riis was photographing grimy back alleys, eight-to-a-room tenements, pigs roaming loose in the streets, and a general atmosphere of squalor on the Lower East Side. The neighborhood has come a long way in those crucial hundred years. At the 2014 LES Opening Night, catwalks line the street instead of garbage, and galleries compete for your coin instead of bootblacks. The high-end block party presents a roster of bands curated by Cake Shop and a fall fashion runway show featuring “Looks of the LES” selected by Cosmopolitan.com editor Amy Odell (and which can be acquired at nearby boutiques). Esteemed art houses cast open their doors for a browse, and the dancers of Paul Taylor 2 present a special performance.
