When one restaurant’s doors close, another’s open in fast-paced New York City, and every Friday we’ll fill you in on what opened up around town this week. This week: Red Hook gets a Thai restaurant, chicken wings hit the Lower East Side in full force, and the Le Bernardin team opens a wine bar.
Aldo Sohm Wine Bar, 151 West 51st Street, 212-554-1143
Le Bernardin has its first spin-off: The team opened Aldo Sohm this week, a wine bar with bottles that start at $30. Sommelier Aldo Sohm is curating the diverse wine selection, while chef Eric Ripert has created a lunch and dinner menu for the location.
Dirty French, 180 Ludlow Street
The Torrisi team is back again with the highly anticipated Dirty French, a restaurant in the Ludlow Hotel. The menu is French-influenced, with items like tuna tartare, bouillabaisse, and duck à l’orange. Cocktails, which we dipped in to try in the Lobby Bar a few weeks back, were created by Thomas Waugh of ZZ’s Clam Bar fame.
Kao Soy, 283 Van Brunt Street, Brooklyn, 718-875-1155
While the neighborhood rolls deep in restaurants, Red Hook had no Thai food options until Kao Soy opened this week. The restaurant is owned by northern Thailand native Kanlaya Supachana; look for a menu of curry noodles, papaya salad, and more.
Saraghina Bakery, 433 Halsey Street, Brooklyn, 718-574-5500
Saraghina owner Eduardo Mantelli brings us Saraghina Bakery, a spot focused on breads, fresh pasta, and more. Stop in for a fresh loaf of ciabatta or olive oils. Fresh baked goods, like pastries and tarts, will be available soon.
Seoul Chicken, 71 Clinton Street, 646-838-6066
Fatty Crab and Fatty ‘Cue alum Chaz Brown knew Korean fried chicken had been done before, but Korean fried chicken with a Southern twist? That was a new idea. Seoul Chicken is a wing joint that boasts wide variety, from fish sauce and garlic wings to habanero and kimchi wings to Sriracha and honey-sauced wings. And yes, there are vegetarian options, too.
