The 10th annual “Oscars of Street Food” returns to Governors Island this year for your gourmandizing pleasure. The Vendy Awards is more than just a tasting event (last’s years “samples” were full, meal-sized portions at just about every truck, but that’s not what we meant). It’s a fierce competition for mobile restaurant glory, as well as a fundraiser benefiting the Street Vendor Project, a nonprofit that defends vendors’ rights and helps preserve conditions for NYC’s blossoming street-food culture. Roam the lawn and try food from favorites like the Cinnamon Snail, Nuchas, and Ramen Burger before winners are announced in categories including “The Masters Cup” (seasoned veterans of vending) and “Rookie of the Year” (young pups new to the streets). Judges will be doing the same. This year, they include brick-and-mortar restaurateurs Alex Guarnaschelli, of Daniel, and Florent Morellet, of his eponymous Meatpacking joint. Stay to the end of the day to see the crew from El Olomeg, last year’s grand prize winner, pass on the cup.
