Dish no. 27: Roasted carrot and avocado salad at Birds & Bubbles (100B Forsyth Street, 646-368-9240)
Yes! The fried chicken at Sarah Simmons’s new restaurant is the main attraction, and you’d be crazy to skip it — she brines the bird for up to 48 hours before dropping it in the fryer, which means the poultry is exceptionally juicy inside its crackly crust. But the chef didn’t neglect the rest of her menu, and the seasonal collection of salads, sides, and starters should be considered with the same mindfulness you’ll put into your Champagne pairing. Do not miss the roasted carrot and avocado salad. It sounds simple, and it is — but the sweet roots play nicely with the velvety avocado, especially when tied together with dill, translucent slices of radish, nuggets of caraway shortbread, and a little sharp feta. This is a dish whose sum is much greater than the list of individual parts.
In advance of our 2014 Best of NYC issue, we’re traipsing through the boroughs and divulging our favorite dishes of the year. They’re presented here as a countdown, but we’re listing them in no particular order. Consider this a guide to what’s good to eat in this town right this very second.
