Overview: In 2001 — after two years of research and development that took the form of crisscrossing the Northeast by motorcycle to sample various hot dogs — Brian Shebairo and Chris Antista opened the first location of Crif Dogs, right on St. Marks Place. Ten years later, buoyed by popularity, the duo opened a second location in Williamsburg, which sits right at North 7th Street and Driggs Avenue, just off the Bedford L stop. How’d they get the name Crif Dogs? Try saying the name Chris between bites of hot dog.
Highlights: While traversing the Eastern Seaboard, Shebairo and Antista didn’t forget about their vegetarian customers. They found a nice soy dog, which you can substitute for meat in any of Crif’s hot-dog specials.
Soy dogs usually lack the smokiness of actual meat — but here, they taste like the real deal. One of the more classic and popular options for vegetarians is the veggie special ($5.50), stacked with onions, tomato, cucumber, and jalapeños. The jalapeños give this dog a real kick. Add waffle fries ($3.50 for a small/$3.95 for a large), which are crispy around the edges and softer in the middle and come in a gigantic portion size.
