Recipe: Fly Away With This Aviation From Meadowsweet’s Stephanie Lempert

What’s your favorite drink to order when you go out?

The Aviation cocktail.

What is it about this drink that you like so much?

It has a fabulous flavor profile, it always goes straight to my head, and the subtle purple hue of this drink is quite lovely.

Has it always been your favorite? How long did it take you to find it? What was that process like?

It has been a drink I always order when I see it on a cocktail list for about five years now. The first time I ordered it, it was because of the name of the drink, the Aviation. It really stood out to me, and once I tried it, I really fell in love.

Where are a few places around town that make your favorite drink?

I have always enjoyed the Aviation served at Stone Park Café in Park Slope, and I have definitely enjoyed a few at Weather Up on Vanderbilt Avenue as well.

What’s the recipe, for those who want to make it at home?

2 ounces gin
2 dashes of maraschino liqueur
.5 ounce fresh lemon juice
2 dashes of creme de violette
Flamed lemon peel for garnish

Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with the flamed lemon peel.

What’s your second favorite drink? Recipe?

This one is pretty seasonal, but it is amazing.

Pickled ramp martini

1 pickled ramp
.25 ounce of its pickling liquid
2.5 ounces Hendricks gin (or the gin of your choice)
Splash dry vermouth

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine the pickled ramp brine, gin, and vermouth, then stir. Strain cocktail into a chilled martini glass and garnish with a pickled ramp.
