Sanford’s has been caffeinating Astorians since its doors opened in 1922, but during the 1990s, when brothers Chris and Gus Karalekas took over for their father, the restaurant was launched into a delectable new era. One brother is a chef, the other a sommelier, and they offer contemporary American cuisine, upscale comfort food, and a diversified and affordably priced wine and beer list. Check out the vintage photo of the original menu, which sold hamburgers for 45 cents and a Western omelette for 85. The prices may have risen since the ’20s, but where else can you get a bottle of Opus One with tuna tartare at three o’clock in the morning?
