Best Baked Good That Hasn’t Gone Viral

Bakers Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito open the second branch of Baked, their Red Hook cake shop, in Tribeca later this year, but there’s still no expectation that sweet-and-salty brownies, pumpkin whoopie pies, and caramel apple cake will draw the block-long lines of tourists and reporters Ladurée and Dominique Ansel attract. That’s likely because Baked delivers a daily bounty of unpretentiously updated bakery classics, and there’s no rush to discover just one. Still, it seems unfortunate that the Tri-Color Bars, chocolate-glazed rectangles of uncut traditional Italian rainbow cookies, haven’t gotten their due in the press. The layers of pink, green, and yellow almond spongecake are as vibrant as ever here, sandwiched together by lip-smacking raspberry jelly.
