Breads Bakery master baker Uri Scheft learned pastry in both Israel and Europe, which gives the selection of baked goods at this Union Square shop unusual breadth. And so there’s much to tempt you: a back counter doles out sandwiches to business lunchers; a front case displays croissants, rugelach, and chocolate babka, plus dozens of different loaves of bread. Scheft’s masterful work with traditional Jewish treats makes this place especially popular during the holidays. We’ll stop in anytime, though, for the North Sea rye, a dark, dense brick thick with boiled rye berries and packed with wholesome flavor.
