Greg Cohen has been a fixture in the jazz world for decades, and you’ve almost certainly heard him in collaboration with the likes of Tom Waits and David Byrne. His best work, though, might be in his longtime partnership with saxophonist and composer John Zorn: Cohen’s basslines provide the thrust for some of the best material that has come out of Zorn’s Masada project, frenetic, ultra-accessible, klezmer-inspired compositions that will likely redefine the way you think about classical music. (Or maybe jazz — it’s a little hard to tell, which is kind of the point.) Most crucial of all is the fact that Cohen lives right here in our backyard, making it easy to step out and catch some of the magic for yourself.
