A holdover from Prohibition, this cozy Greenwich Village hideaway strung up with twinkle lights has been trafficking in improv jazz and blistering blues riffs since 1919. Not much has changed in the intervening years: The drinks at 55 Bar are still cheap, the bar is still cash-only, there is no cover charge for performances until 10 p.m., and everyone — from amateurs to aficionados — is welcome.
