Best Deli/Sandwich Shop

by

Bánh mì sandwiches have a knack for showing up in surprising places, like the back of a jewelry store or, in the case of Sau Voi Corporation, as part of a tiny convenience store hawking Vietnamese pop music, makeup, and porn. A jury-duty haven, Sau Voi’s been serving up overstuffed sandwiches for 25 years, and its extensive 18-item menu sits in direct contrast to the shop’s physical limitations (add desserts and Vietnamese appetizers, and there are 40 dishes on the list). Barbecue pork and shrimp rolls are both in top form, but it’s the shop itself that makes eating these sandwiches such a joy, from the toaster oven used to heat bread to the beat-up bright yellow menu, which hangs above cartons of cigarettes.
