It’s probably easier to name the jazz and rock greats Kenny Wollesen hasn’t played with. There’s gotta be a few. But his credits range from jazz legends like Bill Frisell to pop stars like Norah Jones and a huge chunk of the avant-garde in the middle — suffice it to say the dude’s been around the block. Though he’s versatile enough to fit in with all kinds of performers, Wollesen’s sensibility runs to the intricate, layered rhythms of jazz drummers of yore. A native New Yorker, with vaguely Woody Allenish looks and thick-rimmed glasses, the guy is a fixture in the local scene, and you’ll know him when you hear him.
