Yellow Eyes are one of the best new metal bands in NYC, and their latest EP for Dead Section Records offers a tantalizing glimpse into what the future may hold for this atmospheric and experimental black-metal outfit. The record’s strongest track, “One Rock for the Wild Dog,” sidles in on the strength of a plaintive melody, then launches into desperate, distorted guitar lines strung out with tension. The melodic presence here is undeniable, but it lies buried and rotting beneath the disconsolate shrieks, intensely creative drumming, and buzzing tremolo riffs that make up the aggressive end of Yellow Eyes’ approach. The band is currently working on the follow-up to 2013’s triumphant Hammer of Night full-length, and are set to hit the road with fellow NYC black-metal savants Anicon this autumn.
