The rain really put a damper on 2013’s festivities, but this year’s Governors Ball was a flood of fun beneath clear skies complemented by bearable heat and glorious sets. Over three mud-free days, New Yorkers and out-of-towners alike experienced many of the big names about to make the festival rounds for the rest of the summer before we were all fatigued from even hearing about them. OutKast, Skrillex, and Vampire Weekend killed their headlining spots, but the real triumphs were always early in the afternoon or evening. Locals like Lucius were unsurprisingly phenomenal, while sets from the likes of Chance the Rapper, Janelle Monáe, and Jenny Lewis made you wish they were even higher on the bill. Not only did Gov Ball make a fantastic comeback, it made for an excellent start to everyone’s summer.
