On a quiet residential street in the center of Carroll Gardens sits the unassuming pizzeria Lucali, easily identified by the line of people waiting to put their names on the list at the door. Inside, wooden tables and candlelight fill a space warmed by a glowing brick oven, which is located in the back of the room and is usually manned by Mark Iacono, the owner and pizzaiolo. Lucali serves only two items, pizza and calzones, and you’ll find just a few different toppings to choose from each night. Pies — simultaneously delicate, rustic, and complex — are a cross between Neapolitan style and a distant cousin of the New York slice, and they wear an ideal ratio of sweet mozzarella cheese to tangy sauce atop charred crusts laced with a slightly sour note. This restaurant is also BYOB, so bring a nice bottle of Italian red on your next visit.
