Ever since it opened in 2010, The Acheron has stood as a pillar of New York’s metal/punk community, and its influence only continues to grow. With its flyer-plastered walls and tattooed clientele it may be a DIY spot at heart, but the Acheron tempers its rough-and-tumble metal/punk roots with a professional, no-nonsense staff and diverse show calendar. Most of the staffers play in bands of their own, so there’s an added understanding between them and their guests that larger venues lack. It’s a small (about 150 cap) room with big ambitions. In addition to supporting countless touring bands and locals, the Acheron has played host to ultra-intimate gigs by legends like Eyehategod, Infest, and Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon; its proprietors helmed September’s Brooklyn’s Burning fest in addition to planning the second edition of their annual D-Fest in Mexico City. One of the few 18+ music venues left in the city, it’s looking out for the next generation, too.
